The Nature Makers: Directed by Scott Saunders

naturesmakers1.jpg

Filmed beautifully in the Grand Canyon and on the American prairie, The Nature Makers is a film of biologists who have taken it upon themselves to defend and save wild nature. After watching it, my faith in humanity restored quite a bit because it is quite difficult to believe that nature still exists and appreciated in this world where industry, manufacturing and civilization has taken over. This documentary inspired me to want to make the world a much better place. There are three parts of this documentary, titled Sky, Water, and Land, and all showcase some of the most extreme tactics to conserve different environments that I have ever seen. The first section, “Sky” focuses on biologists located in Nebraska, whose efforts in defending nature allow Sandhill Cranes to continue their annual migration to the river bed, something they have been doing for thousands, and thousands of years. The all come together to maintain a sustainable and safe environment for the birds.

Tsotsi: Directed by Gavin Hood

Tsotsi is a famous 2005 South African drama film that is written and directed by Gavin Hood and produced by Peter Roger Ebert. It is still one of my favourite films and one of the best the best this country has ever produced, in my opinion. It is thought-provoking and the cast is brilliant. It stars Presley Chweneyagae, Terry Pheto, Rapulana Seiphemo, Mothusi Magano, Kenneth Nkosi and many more. Tsotsi is a film full of deep emotional power. It considers a young killer who kills unthinkingly, whose cold eyes show no emotion and lead a gang that smashes and grabs, loots and shoots, stabs and sets out each morning to steal or destroy something. We do not even learn this young man’s real name; “tsotsi” means ‘thug” and that is what he is.

Rehad is well known for the political documentaries he has directed in the past years such as Everything Must Fall which was produced during the #feesmustfall movement in 2018. His main focus is on historical and socio-political productions. How to Steal A Country is a story uncovering a huge corruption scandal involving the president Jacob Zuma and the Gupta brothers. The Gupta brothers came into South Africa to become multi-millionaires through the state funds and lucrative contracts.
